Hair Loss Treatments

There are several options that are effective treatments for hair loss and Dr. Giuffrida will help individualize your treatment based on your needs.

Hair transplantation
The age of the “hair plug” transplant has ended. Current methods of surgical hair transplantation involve moving hairs in their natural groupings, called follicular units, from the permanent zone (back of head) into the areas of hair loss. This provides a result that is both natural appearing and undetectable.

Propecia
Propecia is a prescription tablet that inhibits the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a primary factor in causing the most common type of pattern hair loss. Most patients maintain the hair they have and some even increase hair thickness and grow new hair. It is indicated for men only.

Rogaine (Minoxidil)
Rogaine is a prescription medication that is applied to the scalp skin in a liquid or foam form. The exact mechanism of action is not known. Most patients maintain the hair they have and some even increase hair thickness and grow new hair. It is indicated for both men (5% Minoxidil) and women (2% Minoxidil).

Low level laser therapy (LLLT)
LLLT is a noninvasive treatment using visible red laser light to treat hair loss from androgenetic alopecia. Research has shown that LLLT can stop hair loss in a majority of patients and even stimulates hair growth in some. The visible red laser light can stimulate cell activity and enhance survival in cells of the hair follicle. Laser therapy works best when hair loss is minimal to moderate. There are a number of different low level laser products. Dr. Giuffrida recommends at home treatments with either iGrow or the lasercap. These products are easy to use and are recommended for 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week.

Latisse
Latisse is used along the eyelash line of the upper eyelids to stimulate the growth of longer, thicker and darker eyelashes. It is FDA approved and safe to use but only available via prescription. It is very effective, with noticeable results within 8 to 12 weeks of use.

Viviscal
Viviscal is a food supplement containing special marine extracts called AminoMar. It has been scientifically studied and shown to have a positive effect in stimulating hair growth and assisting in the reversal/prevention of hair loss. It is safe for men and women and in scientific studies, on average 75% of patients taking Viviscal® reported a clinically significant decrease in their hair loss within the first 6 months of use, with many patients reporting hair regrowth.
Viviscal is available in regular strength and extra-strength (Professional). Regular Viviscal may be purchased at selected retailers, but the Viviscal Professional strength is available only via physician’s offices.

Keratin Fibers (Toppik)
Toppik is a safe and natural way to help give your hair the appearance of fullness by making the hairs look thicker. Toppik microfibers are made from pure organic keratin protein and are electro-statically charged in order to bind your existing hair. It is available in different colors to match any natural hair color. This product is safe for use every day, and most patients use it during the growth phase of their hair transplant procedure, while they wait for the new hairs to grow to their full potential.
